Connect an AI assistant
Use Zazen from Claude or ChatGPT through the Zazen connector.
The connector address
https://app.getzazen.com/mcp
It is a remote MCP server. You sign in with your Zazen account the first time you connect; a new account is created if you don't have one.
Connect from Claude
On your own plan (Free, Pro or Max), in Claude on the web or desktop:
- Open Customize › Connectors, choose + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Name it Zazen, paste the address above, and choose Continue.
- Sign in with your Zazen account when asked.
On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector for the organization first (Organization settings › Connectors › Add › Custom › Web, with the address above). Each member then opens Customize › Connectors, finds Zazen and chooses Connect.
Claude's own, maintained instructions: Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP.
Claude Code: run the command below, then run /mcp in Claude Code and sign in.
claude mcp add --transport http zazen https://app.getzazen.com/mcp
To remove it: in Claude, Customize › Connectors (an owner: Organization settings › Connectors), open Zazen and choose Remove. In Claude Code, run claude mcp remove zazen.
Connect from ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, add it as a custom MCP app in developer mode (on plans that offer it; in a workspace, an admin turns it on):
- Turn on developer mode in ChatGPT's settings.
- Add a custom MCP server: name it Zazen, enter the address above as its URL, choose OAuth sign-in, and create it.
- Sign in with your Zazen account when asked.
- In a chat, type @ and pick Zazen to use it.
To remove it, open the app in ChatGPT's settings and disconnect or delete it. ChatGPT's menus change often; OpenAI's maintained instructions: Developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT.
What it can do
Your assistant can do most of what you do with your books in the Zazen app:
- Set up a book: its chart of accounts and its bookkeeping rules.
- Read your books: transactions, accounts, vendors and customers, documents and activity.
- Record transactions from receipts, invoices and bills you share, or from imported bank and card files, and classify them.
- Match bank activity, reconcile accounts against statements, and fix mistakes (reclassify, reverse, apply payments).
- Run reports: profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow, trial balance, general ledger, and what customers owe and what you owe.
- Work through the work queue: what needs attention in the books and why.
What it cannot do
- Move money. Zazen records bookkeeping; it never makes payments or transfers, and it does not connect to your bank.
- Administer your organization: it cannot invite or remove members, grant or revoke anyone's access, or disconnect assistants. Only a person signed in to the app can.
- Go beyond your own access. An assistant can do at most what you can, capped further by the level you set for it: read only, record but not post, or post (the default).
- Read your conversations. It receives only the requests your assistant sends it.
- Read or keep tax identification numbers. Don't share documents that show an SSN, EIN or ITIN.
Change access or disconnect
In the Zazen app, open Settings › Connected agents. Each assistant you have connected is listed there: lower or raise its level (never above your own), or disconnect it. A change applies to its next request. You can also remove the connector in your assistant's own settings.
